Why CDPH Warns Consumers of Fake PolkaDot Shroom Bars

According to an article by CDPH on November 22, 2024, CDPH warns consumers not to eat PolkaDot Amanita brand Mushroom Magic Blend Chocolate Bars. These products are fake and adulterated with psychoactive drugs and can cause adverse health effects, as the FDA does not regulate them.

Products were sold online and to retailers throughout California, as well as possibly in other states.

CDPH and the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department are investigating the PolkaDot brand chocolate bars labeled with an unsafe food additive, Amanita muscaria, a type of mushroom, CDPH reported. Laboratory testing also found the chocolate bars contained an additional synthetic psychoactive drug.

Over $3 million worth of PolkaDot brand chocolate bars, which are manufactured as micro-dosing mushroom edibles, were embargoed and voluntarily destroyed, CDPH reported.

Why did CDPH issue a warning to the public?

Investigators said the bars taken in September, which were originally suspected of containing Amanita muscaria mushrooms, were later tested at the San Diego County Regional Crime Laboratory, where they instead were found to contain two controlled substances, 4-Acetoxy-DET (4-Acetoxy-N, N-diethyltryptamine) and 4-Hydroxy-DET (4-Hydroxy-N, N-diethyltryptamine).

Diethyltryptamine, also known as DET, is a Schedule 1 controlled substance, according to the sheriff’s department, and is similar in chemical makeup to DMT, which officials described as a “strong psychedelic drug and hallucinogen.”

Dangers of Consuming Fake PolkaDot Mushroom Chocolate Bars

Fake bars compromise taste and pose health risks to consumers, and sometimes death. Counterfeit bars may have unregulated amounts of psilocybin or harmful substances, which can lead to unpredictable health effects, as in the case of Diamond Shruumz.

Examples of these fake/counterfeit Polka Dot bars are shown below, which have been found to contain synthetic chemicals and other additives.

We should all note that legality doesn’t always mean safety. The fact that these adulterated or counterfeit polkadot bars laced with synthetic chemicals are sold as Amanita supplement bars doesn’t mean they are safe to eat. Always do your research!

The Impact of Unrealized Dosage in Fake PolkaDot Bars

Consuming fake bars not only cheats consumers but also puts them at risk. The lack of dosage control in counterfeit Polkadot bars presents a grave issue. This unpredictability can lead to unexpected psychological experiences for consumers.

Health Risks Associated with Counterfeit Products

When it comes to indulgent treats like the Polkadot mushroom chocolate bar, the beauty of enhanced flavors and purported health benefits can be tempting. However, the rise of counterfeit products in the market poses significant health risks that consumers should be aware of.

Unlike legitimate chocolate bars, counterfeit mushroom chocolates often contain unregulated substances or harmful additives that can jeopardize your health. Several hospitalized cases have been reported similar to the case with the Australian Uncle Frogs brand, which has been recalled.

One of the primary concerns with fake Polkadot mushroom bars is that they do not contain the advertised amount of ingredients, such as adaptogenic mushrooms, leaving consumers misled about their health or therapeutic benefits.

Moreover, the potential for harmful substances is heightened with counterfeit products. Fake Polkadot mushroom products may be laced with unregulated psychoactive ingredients or stimulants that can lead to unexpected and adverse reactions such as nausea, persistent vomiting, and even death in some cases.

This is particularly concerning for individuals with pre-existing health conditions or those taking medications, as interactions can be unpredictable, nauseating, and dangerous.
